Mint Julep

Mint Julep

The Mint Julep is an iconic 3 ingredient cocktail which was also named the official drink of the Kentucky Derby in 1938. The simple combination of bourbon, mint and simple syrup is carefully muddled and diluted to create a perfect whiskey summer sipper.
It’s interesting to note that the julep didn’t always have a bourbon base, commonly being made with either rum or French brandy. A prolific insect plague in the mid 1800’s decimated French grapevines resulting in severely diminished production of brandy, cementing whiskey as the spirit base for the drink (as well as many other cocktails during this period).
