
How to make an Old Fashioned
In the 1800s, the term "cocktail" referred to a drink consisting of spirit, water, sugar and bitters. Bartenders were also making "improved" versions which often included maraschino liqueur, absinthe and/or other ingredients.People started ordering an "old-fashioned whiskey cocktail" to ensure they received a whiskey-based cocktail that didn't have any adulterations and by 1880 the mixed drink was commonly referred to as the Old Fashioned.
Ingredients
- 60 ml bourbon whiskey or rye whiskey
- 1 barspoon simple syrup
- 2-3 dashes aromatic bitters
Instructions
- In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients
- Stir with ice for 20-30 seconds
- Strain over fresh ice into an old fashioned glass
- Garnish with an orange (or lemon) twist
