How to make an Old Fashioned

In the 1800s, the term "cocktail" referred to a drink consisting of spirit, water, sugar and bitters. Bartenders were also making "improved" versions which often included maraschino liqueur, absinthe and/or other ingredients.
People started ordering an "old-fashioned whiskey cocktail" to ensure they received a whiskey-based cocktail that didn't have any adulterations and by 1880 the mixed drink was commonly referred to as the Old Fashioned.
